| Description | In this lesson, students use calculations, visualization, and logical reasoning to discover that a wide cylinder has more surface area than a tall cylinder when their volumes are the same. Students will also find that a change in diameter of a cylinder has a greater impact on surface area and volume than a change in height. |

The Mayflower Story: Up Close and Personal | |
| Description | Students in an eighth grade social studies classroom have been exposed to the Mayflower story and the story of the "Pilgrims" for most of their school careers. This information has come to them in a variety of ways. It is likely that they have not analyzed the stories that they have been told about the Plymouth Colony and its first years. In addition, they may perceive history as something that is told to them and taken at face value, without question. The purpose of this lesson is to show students that historic interpretation is a process and not static. They will be exposed to that process as they reinterpret the story of the "Pilgrims" based on information that they receive during the lesson. |
